Steve Bates slams Manchester United treatment of Rasmus Hojlund

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund joined Napoli on loan during the summer transfer window, and Steve Bates has had his say on the saga.

Rasmus Hojlund failed to make his mark at Old Trafford, and he had to leave towards Napoli in search of regular playing time. The Danish striker has been excellent for Napoli since joining them. His performances with the Serie A club suggest that Manchester United were not able to bring out the best in the player.

The Danish international joined Manchester United as a 20-year-old, and he needed more support. The Red Devils decided to pay £72 million to sign the youngster from Atalanta, and the overpriced transfer put the striker under enormous pressure.

Steve Bates has now explained on Give Me Sport that Manchester United should have helped the young attacker deal with the burden of carrying their attacking unit. The player was under tremendous scrutiny during his time at the club, and perhaps Manchester United should have been more nurturing towards him.

Bates wrote, ” While Cunha and Mbeumo have fed off each other’s energy and shared the burden of carrying a Red Devils attack that’s always under 24/7 scrutiny, the shameful way Hojlund was left to carry the can for failings last term is a negligence that cannot be overlooked.”

The Dane is currently out on loan at Napoli, and he has shown his quality with the Serie A champions. It will be interesting to see if Manchester United decide to bring him back to the club at the end of the season. The Red Devils have already invested in Benjamin Sesko, and the Denmark international could struggle for regular game time at Old Trafford.

It would make sense for him to leave Manchester United permanently and focus on his development with regular football at another club. The 22-year-old will certainly hope to continue impressing with Napoli until the end of the season so that they can sign him permanently in the summer.

There is no doubt that he is a talented player with a bright future. Manchester United could end up regretting their decision. The Denmark international striker is quite young, and he has plenty of time to fulfil his potential.

If Hojlund continues to perform at a high level until the end of the season, there will be no shortage of clubs looking to provide him with an exit route from Old Trafford. The Danish striker scored 16 goals during his first season with Manchester United, and the Red Devils could have stuck with him and given him more opportunities.
