Mauricio Pochettino front-runners to become next Tottenham manager

Mauricio Pochettino is the reported frontrunner for the Tottenham job, but the club might have to wait until the summer to secure the Argentine’s signature.

According to Fichajes, Mauricio Pochettino is reported to be the main candidate for the Tottenham job following Thomas Frank’s sacking. The 53-year-old former Chelsea manager was in charge of the north London side for around five seasons, as the club feels he could be the answer to their recent woes, but may have to wait until the summer to secure his signature.

Tottenham are now seen as a relegation candidate following their latest loss at home to Newcastle United. The defeat was also Thomas Frank’s last game in charge of what has been a dismal spell since his appointment in the summer, as Spurs announced his sacking on Wednesday.

There are two pathways the club are contemplating ahead of time, with one idea pointing towards an immediate full-time replacement or bringing in an interim coach until the end of the season. There are some managers being mentioned in the media as Frank’s potential successor, including former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is another target, while Mauricio Pochettino is seemingly seen as the frontrunner as things stand. The report states that the club may have made a majority decision on re-appointing the Argentine to the helm following his departure in 2019.

A five-year spell in north London for the 53-year-old former Chelsea manager probably brought the most competitive period in the club’s recent history. Spurs are eager to bring someone who knows the club in and out, as Pochettino is seen as the answer to their long-standing woes.

Pochettino’s appointment complicated?

Many credible sources have pointed to Pochettino being the favourites for the Spurs job, and he is reportedly open to the idea. Should Tottenham decide on the Argentine, they might have to wait until the summer to secure his signature as he fulfils his obligations with the USMNT at the World Cup in the summer, and his contract there expires after the conclusion of the tournament.

Hence, the idea of an interim boss seems likely at the moment for Spurs, who may want to see out the remainder of the season and then sign Pochettino in the summer. For now, the Argentine seems like the favourites to rejoin Tottenham, but things can change depending on what the club thinks they need in the immediate term.
