Hamburg’s Nicolai Remberg speaks on post-match ruckus in Wolfsburg

Hamburg midfielder Nicolai Ramberg remained tight lipped about a frustration fueled scuffle that broke out in Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon. Wolfsburg third straight Bundesliga defeat (and sixth league loss in their last seven matches) didn’t help their chances of remaining in the German top flight. After the full-time whistle, tensions boiled over.

Players and coaches from both teams exchanged blows on the pitch. In the stands, angry Wolfsburg ultras ignited flares and stoked a medium-sized fire in the stands. Security officers quickly flooded onto the field to ensure that no pitch invasion would take place. Thankfully, there were also no riots either inside or outside the Volkswagen Arena.

Amongst the coaches and players, no one was seriously hurt. Wolfsburg back-up keeper Marius Müller received a red card for his part in the fracas. In order to obviate any further tensions, Hamburger SV players and staff were quickly whisked out of the stadium. HSV head coach Merlin Polzin was not available to participate in the post match press conference.

Hamburg’s Nicolai Remberg briefly speaks to journalists

The midfielder tasked with donning the HSV armband on the day did briefly offer up some comments in the mixed zone before heading to the team’s bus. Remberg – who just last year found himself relegated from the Bundesliga with Holstein Kiel – chalked the incident up to the fact that frustration remained rampant with so much at stake.

It was just a little scrap,” Remberg told reporters. “That’s all part of football and I don’t think what happened was all that serious. I saw my assistant coach Richard Krohn being surrounded by three Wolfsburg players. I needed to step in and help so as not to leave the boys alone.

No one got punched badly or anything,” Remberg continued, though he was sure to add: “Everything that was said [during the confrontation] isn’t something that I can share.
