According to Football Insider, Bart Verbruggen will reportedly cost at least £50 million in the summer window, with Brighton anticipating interest. Newcastle United are at the forefront of reports linking them with the Dutch goalkeeper, as Eddie Howe looks to revamp the position with a decisive addition.
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been considering revamping the goalkeeping position since last summer, but conditions then proved unfavourable for his plans. The Magpies boss wanted to bring in James Trafford to compete with first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope, but ended up signing Aaron Ramsdale on loan instead.
As the season has progressed, it remains unclear whether Pope or Ramsdale will be at the club beyond the summer, as Newcastle United still retain an interest in Trafford. The latter signed for Manchester City back in the summer, but soon lost his briefly held No. 1 spot following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma.
While the former Burnley man remains a target, Howe is keen to widen the net, with other goalkeepers such as Gregor Kobel also on Newcastle United’s shortlist. There are several other names too, including Bart Verbruggen, as Brighton have seemingly named their price to sell the year-old Premier League goalkeeper.
Brighton reportedly wants £50 million to sell the 23-year-old Premier League goalkeeper, which might be seen as on the higher side by Newcastle United. Players such as Ramsdale or even Trafford could be signed for less based on their valuations, so the Magpies may look for ways to negotiate Verbruggen’s price.
Verbruggen has other clubs, such as Tottenham and Real Madrid, showing interest, which could put Brighton in a strong position when dictating his price. Chelsea are also keen on the Dutchman as they, too, seek a new goalkeeper to provide strong competition within their ranks. Newcastle United could have the edge if they are able to provide Verbruggen with guarantees of a starting spot, but the price point will be difficult to match.
Whether Verbruggen is worth the asking price is up for debate, although he does possess all the attributes needed for a modern-day Premier League goalkeeper. At the moment, the market may dictate the terms of his sale, as Brighton will know the right price at which to offload him after considering all the factors surrounding the player, including the level of interest in the market.
