The UEFA Champions League round of 16 has arrived with the new format doing exactly what a knockout stage should do: pulling giants into dangerous ties while still leaving space for a few clubs who feel ready to crash the usual party.
Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Sporting CP, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City came through the league phase in the top eight, but the bracket is still packed with heavyweights because Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, Newcastle, Bodo/Glimt, Galatasaray, and Bayer Leverkusen all had to take the longer route through or below the automatic places to get here.
That has given us a first-leg lineup with almost no soft landing, from Real Madrid against Manchester City and PSG against Chelsea to the more awkward, high-energy contests involving Galatasaray, Newcastle United, and Bodo/Glimt at home.
There is variety everywhere in this round of the UEFA Champions League: title contenders, wounded giants, teams with strong home records, and a few sides whose whole European identity seems to sharpen once the lights get brighter.
More than usual, these opening matches feel like pressure nights rather than dress rehearsals, because several ties feature hosts who have already pulled off major results in this competition and will believe they must build an edge before the return leg. The margins should be thin, but the drama already feels inevitable.
Galatasaray arrive here after beating Juventus 7-5 on aggregate after extra time in the play-offs, and they already showed in the league phase that they can hurt Liverpool, beating them 1-0 in Istanbul on Matchday 2.
Liverpool, though, finished third in the league phase and posted standout wins over Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, which suggests Arne Slot’s charges have a higher ceiling across two legs even if this first night is likely to be messy and emotional.
Prediction: Galatasaray 1-2 Liverpool.
Atalanta’s route to the round of 16 has been full of swings, from finishing 15th in the league phase to overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Borussia Dortmund and going through with a 98th-minute penalty in the second leg.
Bayern Munich, by contrast, were one of the cleanest performers in the league phase, winning seven of eight matches and scoring 22 goals, with Harry Kane still the central danger in a side that has largely rediscovered its authority under Vincent Kompany.
Prediction: Atalanta 1-2 Bayern Munich.
Atletico Madrid reached this stage by beating Club Brugge 7-4 on aggregate, and UEFA’s own profile of Diego Simeone’s side points to the Metropolitano as a major weapon after strong home numbers and a spread of goalscorers led by Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth.
Tottenham were fourth in the league phase and lost only once in eight matches, but their best European work has been tied closely to their home form, so this first leg feels like the sort of game Atleti will want to drag into a slower, nastier rhythm.
Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur.
Newcastle United battered Qarabag 9-3 on aggregate in the play-offs and carry real belief into this tie, especially with UEFA noting that they have lost only four of their last 36 home European matches.
Barcelona did win 2-1 at St. James’ Park earlier in the league phase and finished fifth overall with 22 goals scored, but they also conceded 14 times in eight league-phase games, so this feels like the kind of tie where their talent and Newcastle United’s intensity could collide head-on.
Prediction: Newcastle United 2-2 Barcelona.
Bayer Leverkusen needed the play-offs after finishing 16th in the league phase, but they then shut out Olympiacos across both legs and now come in on a run of five clean sheets in seven Champions League matches, according to UEFA’s contender profile.
Arsenal were the standout league-phase team at eight wins from eight, scored 23 goals, conceded only four, and became the first side to complete the phase with a perfect record, so they will view this draw as difficult but manageable.
Prediction: Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Arsenal.
Bodo/Glimt are the wildcard of the round after beating Manchester City and Atletico Madrid late in the league phase and then knocking out Inter Milan 5-2 on aggregate in the play-offs.
Sporting CP, however, earned a direct place in the last 16 by finishing seventh, and UEFA highlighted wins over Paris Saint-Germain and Athletic Club as signs of a side playing with more maturity and belief in Europe.
Prediction: Bodo/Glimt 1-1 Sporting CP.
PSG are the reigning champions, but they have hardly cruised to this point, finishing 11th in the league phase before edging AS Monaco 5-4 on aggregate in the play-offs after a campaign marked by brilliant attacking spells and some loose moments.
Chelsea were sixth in the league phase and did produce a statement 3-0 win over Barcelona, yet UEFA’s assessment of their season also kept returning to one word: inconsistency, which is not the easiest habit to carry into Paris.
Prediction: Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Chelsea.
No tie in the round feels heavier than this one, and it already has a recent twist because Manchester City beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the league phase, while Los Blancos needed the play-offs to get past Benfica 3-1 on aggregate.
Real Madrid still sit top of UEFA’s coefficient ranking and have Vinicius Junior firing on all cylinders, while Manchester City finished eighth in the league phase and remain built around Erling Haaland’s ruthless output. So, this first leg looks more like a chess match with elite finishers than a reckless shootout.
Prediction: Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester City.
