Steven Gerrard dreams of managing Liverpool

Steven Gerrard opens up on his ‘dream’ to manage Liverpool, while staying grounded and stating he might not be ready at this moment.

Steven Gerrard is a legendary figure over at Liverpool, and many of the fans at the club had previously stated they might like to see him manage the team one day. There were rumours a few years ago when Jürgen Klopp’s future was in some doubt, while Gerrard was at Rangers.

However, the opportunity never came about, and when Klopp left, Gerrard was not seen as someone to take the team forward. At the time, the club were reportedly interested in signing his former teammate Xabi Alonso, but ultimately ended up appointing Arne Slot instead, a decision that has been mixed so far.

Arne Slot led Liverpool to a league title in his first season in charge, but this term his team has been in disarray. There is a real danger of Liverpool missing out on Champions League football, which has placed his future at the club in doubt.

Incidentally, Xabi Alonso is linked again, something that is reportedly bothering Arne Slot, as Liverpool could be heading towards another change in the summer. Now, Gerrard has once again suggested it would be a ‘dream’ for him to manage the club, although he was grounded and insisted he might not be ready to do the job just yet.

On his recent appearance on The Overlap, Gerrard spoke about a number of things related to Liverpool, including the managerial situation. He did claim it was a ‘dream’ to manage his boyhood club, but did not show any signs that he was ready to push to replace Arne Slot.

Gerrard said, “I’ve got a brilliant connection with the club, I always have. Probably a stronger connection since I left — they’ve always been unbelievable.

“Any help or area where I could help the club, obviously, I’d try and do it if I could. But I suppose what you want to know is, do I want to manage Liverpool at some point in my life?

“Of course, that would be a dream, but I think, would I be ready for it right now, to take it over a long period of time — probably not. But is there a possibility in the future to be alongside one of them elite managers that you talk about?”

Gerrard is not a novice in the managerial game, having had spells with Rangers where he won the league in Scotland. The league winner has also managed Aston Villa, and Saudi side Al-Ettifaq. His experience is still somewhat limited when it comes to managing clubs of Liverpool’s stature, which is why there is far less chatter about the 45-year-old taking over from Slot.

There are suggestions that he could be open to stepping in as interim manager should the club part ways with Slot. For now, Gerrard may be dreaming of managing Liverpool in the future, but at present, he is neither in the running nor under consideration.
