Arne Slot had a sensational first season at Liverpool, but he has failed to back it up this time around. With things going south, he has been linked with an exit over the last six or so months. Former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso is considered a favourite to replace him at Anfield.
But according to a report from Fichajes, the Reds are now considering making a surprise decision regarding the Dutch manager’s future. They are willing to stick with him despite their struggles in the ongoing campaign.
Slot was handed the reins of the Merseyside club in the summer of 2024, after Jurgen Klopp decided to bring an end to his time at Anfield. In his very first season, he led them to the Premier League title.
On the back of that exceptional start, the Reds backed him in the last summer transfer market. They forked out a fortune to bolster their squad. However, those moves haven’t really worked out as Liverpool look set to go trophyless.
The league title is beyond their reach with leaders Arsenal 18 points clear, they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City (4-0 hammering) and look set to be kicked out of the Champions League by PSG (0-2 down after first-leg). Given the kind of season it has been, it is not a surprise that Slot’s future has been up in the air.
Despite being fifth, they will most likely secure a Champions League spot thanks to the extra spot awarded to the Premier League. But the overall feeling isn’t that great at Anfield, as they invested a lot to ensure they could back up the performance of last season.
For months, Slot has been linked with an exit, and Xabi Alonso’s name has emerged as the leading candidate to replace him. Despite his struggles at Madrid, Liverpool has been in favour of his appointment because of his knowledge of the club from his playing days and his impressive work at Bayer Leverkusen.
However, the situation seems to have changed in the last few hours. Slot’s chances of staying at Anfield have improved drastically, surprising everyone. Despite their struggles, the board feels they need stability, and they seem optimistic that the Dutch manager could turn things around.
Given their decision, they will most likely look to back him in the market yet again, as they beleive the problems that exist at the club are solvable.
