Sporting CP midfield mainstay, Morten Hjulmand, has attracted a lot of interest ahead of the summer transfer window. He has quickly become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the world.
According to a report from CaughtOffside, Manchester United and Liverpool are both keen on acquiring his services. The Premier League giants are believed to be front-runners for his signature. They seem set for an intense transfer battle.
Hjulmand arrived at the Portuguese club in the summer of 2023 from Lecce and hasn’t looked back since. He has established himself as their mainstay and has been their skipper for a while now. Not only is he great defensively, but the 26-year-old also has exceptional ball distribution.
He is widely regarded as one of the most complete number six and thanks to his consistent performances, a number of clubs are after him. He has 40 appearances this season and has even contributed towards eight goals.
While his contract with Sporting runs until the summer of 2028, and he is protected by a massive €80 million release clause, there are high chances of him being on the move amidst interest from Liverpool and Manchester United.
While there are other top clubs in the mix, the Premier League duo are leading the chase. His strong physical presence, ability to control the tempo and play the role of a deep-lying playmaker are key reasons why the biggest clubs in England want him.
The Red Devils have identified him as an ideal successor to Casemiro, who is leaving after the end of the season. Meanwhile, Liverpool seek more competition for Ryan Gravenberch, and they admire Hjulmand’s versatility.
While a move to the Premier League will certainly see his wages go up to around £120,000 to £150,000 per week, the Danish international will prioritise project over money. Since both United and Liverpool can offer him a competitive project and similar wages, it will be interesting to see who wins the race.
