Crans-Montana survivor Tahirys Dos Santos to sign first professional contract with FC Metz

FC Metz defender Tahirys Dos Santos (19) will sign his first professional contract with the Ligue 1 club next week, according to L’Équipe.

Dos Santos, who survived the horrific New Year’s Eve fire at the Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, heroically re-entering the building in order to find and save his girlfriend, suffered burns on 30% of his body, including on his head, his arms and his torso.

Despite spending several weeks in hospital, he was able to resume training and last week, only 100 days after the fire, he appeared for the Metz reserve team in a National 3 match against Balagne.

Long admired at the club for his dedication and strength of character, Dos Santos will hope to begin to establish himself in the left-back berth, where Metz have struggled to replace fellow home-grown talent and former captain Matthieu Udol, who joined RC Lens last summer.

Dos Santos’ recovery is a rare good news story this season for the club, which sits at the bottom of the table and is destined for relegation and there is hope within the club that he may be able to feature in Metz’s final home match of the season in May.
