Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe exits Real Betis draw after requesting substitution

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has picked up an injury during their 1-1 draw with Real Betis on Friday night at La Cartuja, Hector Bellerin coming up with a late equaliser to further close the door on their title challenge. The French forward was the one that requested the change, without clear indication of what had happened.

Around minute 80 during the tie, with Real Madrid leading Betis by a goal, Mbappe went down the right side taking on defenders, before playing a pass across the box to Vinicius, after which he briefly went to the ground. Back on his feet quickly, Mbappe immediately asked for a substitution. He then went straight down the tunnel, without being examined by the medical staff.

Arbeloa unsure of Mbappe diagnosis

Asked about the injury after the game, Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa was unable to provide any further information.

“I don’t know, no idea. He had discomfort. And we’ll see how he progresses in the coming days,” he noted. Los Blancos will no doubt be hoping that it is not a similar case to that of Arda Guler and Eder Militao, who were ruled out for the season on Thursday.

Mbappe believed to have suffered hamstring strain

Militao also exited Real Madrid’s win over Alaves as a precaution, before being diagnosed with a hamstring tear. The hope will be that Mbappe fares better, with Diario AS reporting that the suspicion is a hamstring strain. If that is the case, Mbappe would likely be back in time to face Espanyol next weekend, and Barcelona in El Clasico in two weeks’ time.
