PSG will begin their Champions League title defence at home on Wednesday when they welcome Slovan Bratislava to Parc des Princes.
The reigning Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League holders enter the competition as overwhelming favourites after retaining the European crown last season, while Slovan are appearing in the league phase for only the second time.
PSG arrive at their Champions League opener in an unusual period of domestic uncertainty. Luis Enrique’s side retained the Champions League last season after defeating Arsenal on penalties in the final, having previously eliminated Monaco, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich during a remarkable knockout-stage run.
They subsequently defeated Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup, but their domestic campaign has been far less convincing. PSG have failed to win any of their four domestic matches this season, including a 2-1 home defeat against AS Monaco. They currently sit 13th in Ligue 1.
That makes Wednesday’s fixture an important opportunity to restore confidence. European competition has generally brought out the best in Enrique’s team, and the familiarity of a Parc des Princes home crowd should encourage PSG to attack from the outset.
Slovan Bratislava arrive in Paris with considerably less European pedigree. Their only previous Champions League league-phase appearance came in 2024/25, when they lost all eight matches and finished second-bottom of the 36-team standings. Yaya Toure’s appointment represents a new chapter for the Slovakian champions, who successfully navigated another demanding qualifying campaign to reach the league phase.
Slovan defeated Iberia Tbilisi and Swedish champions Mjallby before eventually overcoming Celje after extra time in the playoffs. However, their domestic form has recently deteriorated. Back-to-back defeats have left them fourth in Slovakia’s Super Liga, hardly ideal preparation for a trip to the reigning European champions.
PSG have participated in every Champions League campaign since 2012/13, reaching the knockout rounds on every occasion. Slovan, meanwhile, are still establishing themselves at this level. The Slovakian side’s only previous visit to the Parc des Princes came in the 2011/12 Europa League, when PSG secured a narrow 1-0 victory. The challenge is considerably greater this time.
PSG possess superior quality throughout the squad, while their ability to maintain sustained possession and press high should make it difficult for Slovan to establish any rhythm. The away side’s priority will be defensive organisation and they are likely to defend in a compact block and attempt to frustrate PSG for as long as possible. Quick counter-attacks will provide their clearest route to goal, particularly if PSG commit both full-backs forward and for PSG, patience could be important.
Slovan are unlikely to offer much space centrally, meaning Enrique’s side may need to circulate possession quickly and use width to pull the visitors apart. The hosts’ attacking players should eventually create openings through individual quality, movement between the lines and combinations around the penalty area. PSG will also want an early goal. Paris Saint-Germain have reshaped their attack ahead of the new season, bringing in Mika Godts, Maghnes Akliouche, and Ferran Torres while creating additional competition for places alongside Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian, in particular, is key, having recorded 16 Champions League goal involvements last season, a club record for a single campaign.
Nuno Mendes is now available again after serving his suspension and should return at left-back. That would allow Warren Zaire-Emery to move back into his natural midfield role after filling in defensively against Monaco. Luis Enrique is expected to retain his preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Matvey Safonov in goal and Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, and Nuno Mendes forming the back four.
The midfield trio of Joao Neves, Vitinha, and Fabian Ruiz should provide PSG with control and technical quality. Their ability to circulate possession quickly will be crucial against a Slovan side likely to defend in a compact shape. Up front, Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are expected to start. Dembele’s pace and movement should stretch the Slovakian side’s defence, while Kvaratskhelia offers PSG a constant one-on-one threat from the left.
PSG’s biggest tactical objective will be to establish control early. Despite their recent domestic struggles, they remain the vastly more experienced side in this competition, and the Parc des Princes should provide the ideal environment to regain momentum. With Slovan expected to defend deep, PSG may use Hakimi and Mendes to provide additional width while Vitinha and Neves circulate possession centrally. Doue and Kvaratskhelia can then move inside to create numerical advantages around the penalty area.
The hosts will also need to avoid becoming vulnerable to counter-attacks. Slovan’s best opportunity is likely to come when PSG commit numbers forward, so Pacho and Marquinhos will need to remain alert when possession is lost.

Slovan Bratislava head into their Champions League opener with Tigran Barseghyan expected to be one of their principal attacking outlets. The Armenian winger was Slovan’s leading player for goal involvements, assists and chances created during their previous Champions League league-phase campaign, making his creativity particularly important against PSG.
Barseghyan should operate from the right side of Slovan’s expected 4-3-3, where he can look to attack the space behind PSG’s advancing left-back. His ability to carry the ball forward and create chances will be crucial if the visitors are to threaten on the counter. Up front, experienced Slovenian striker Andraz Sporar is expected to lead the line.
The skipper has already scored twice during European qualifying, demonstrating that he can provide a genuine finishing threat if Slovan manage to create opportunities. Roman Cerepkai provides another option in attack but is expected to begin on the bench. Slovan are therefore likely to rely on Sporar’s experience and Barseghyan’s creativity to trouble PSG’s defence.
The midfield trio of Rahim Ibrahim, Peter Pokorny, and Cristian Martinez will have a particularly demanding assignment. PSG are expected to dominate possession, so Slovan’s midfielders will need to remain disciplined, close passing lanes and prevent Vitinha and Joao Neves from dictating the game.
Defensively, Slovan should remain compact and avoid leaving excessive space between their midfield and back line. PSG’s fluid front three of Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia can punish even small gaps. Slovan’s best route to success is therefore likely to be defensive discipline followed by rapid counter-attacks, with Barseghyan providing the main creative outlet and Sporar attacking the penalty area.
The visitors will know the scale of the challenge. PSG are the reigning European champions, while Slovan’s previous Champions League league-phase campaign ended with eight defeats from eight matches. Nevertheless, their successful qualifying campaign should give Yaya Touré’s side confidence heading into the Parc des Princes.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is the standout player to watch when PSG welcome Slovan Bratislava to the Parc des Princes. The Georgian winger was one of PSG’s most influential players during their remarkable Champions League campaign last season, registering 16 goal involvements in 16 appearances, a club record for a single season.
Kvaratskhelia’s ability to beat defenders, cut inside from the left and create chances makes him particularly dangerous against a Slovan defence that is likely to spend long periods under pressure. He should operate alongside Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, giving PSG three highly mobile attackers capable of constantly changing positions. Kvaratskhelia’s movement inside should also create space for Nuno Mendes to advance from left-back.
Slovan’s compact defensive shape could initially make it difficult for PSG to find space centrally, but Kvaratskhelia’s individual ability could be the difference. If he receives the ball one-on-one against a full-back, he has the skill to break the defensive structure himself.
With PSG looking to respond to their recent domestic struggles, this is also an ideal fixture for Kvaratskhelia to make a statement. The reigning European champions will expect their attacking stars to take control against a Slovan side appearing in the Champions League league phase for only the second time.
Slovan Bratislava deserve credit for navigating a difficult qualifying campaign to reach the league phase, but this is an enormous step up in quality. PSG have struggled domestically, yet their Champions League pedigree remains exceptional, and they have regularly produced their best football on Europe’s biggest stage.
