Chicago Fire will look to close the gap on second-placed Inter Miami when the two Eastern Conference contenders meet at Soldier Field on Wednesday evening.
Chicago Fire are currently third, five points behind Inter Miami, and know that victory would bring them within two points of the Herons while also leaving them with a game in hand.
The Men in Red have been one of the more consistent sides in the Eastern Conference this season, although their inability to protect leads has cost them valuable points. Gregg Berhalter’s side surrendered another advantage in Saturday’s remarkable 4-4 draw against Toronto, continuing a worrying trend.
The Fire have now dropped a combined 18 points in MLS matches in which they scored first. Despite that weakness, their home form provides plenty of encouragement. Chicago are seeking a fourth consecutive MLS victory at Soldier Field, which would be their longest home winning streak of the current campaign.
A victory would also give them an eighth home league win of the season, matching their highest total since 2019. The Fire have also enjoyed this particular matchup on home soil. Inter Miami have scored a league-high 58 goals this season and have found the net in each of their last eight away MLS matches. That combination of attacking quality and defensive vulnerability has made the Herons extremely unpredictable. Kily Gonzalez remains unbeaten since taking charge and will now look to secure his first away victory as Inter Miami manager.
The tactical battle could come down to whether Chicago can exploit Miami’s defensive vulnerabilities without repeating their own mistakes. The Fire’s tendency to surrender leads is particularly relevant against an Inter Miami side capable of scoring from almost anywhere. Chicago should look to press Miami’s midfield and attack quickly when possession is regained.
Their home advantage should encourage an aggressive approach, particularly given the importance of the three points. Despite those concerns, the Herons retain an extraordinary attacking threat through Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Messi’s latest assist also extended an extraordinary MLS record: he became the first player in league history to record at least 30 goal contributions in three separate seasons.
Kily Gonzalez is expected to retain a 4-3-3 formation, with Dayne St. Clair in goal and Ian Fray, Casemiro, Maximiliano Falcon, and Fricio Caicedo forming the defensive line. The midfield trio of Rodrigo De Paul, Yannick Bright, and Telasco Segovia should provide the balance between defensive work and attacking progression. Segovia has been particularly influential this season, registering three goals and eight assists.
Up front, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are expected to be joined by Mateo Silvetti. Messi’s movement from the right should allow him to drift centrally and combine with Suarez, while Silvetti can provide width on the opposite flank. The major tactical concern remains Miami’s defence.

His creativity will be especially important against Chicago because Miami’s attack is likely to see plenty of possession in dangerous areas. Messi can drift centrally from the right, combine with Luis Suárez, or exploit the space around Chicago’s midfield. There is also a wider context to his current form: Messi has been named among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after contributing 75 goals and assists across 49 appearances for Inter Miami and Argentina.
Chicago’s defensive vulnerability could give Messi plenty of opportunities to influence the game, particularly if the Fire push forward looking for the win.
