Manchester United may turn to 58-year-old French tactician Didier Deschamps if they decide to sack Michael Carrick.
According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Manchester United have contacted Didier Deschamps to discuss a possible move to the managerial dugout. The Red Devils are combing the market for a new head coach after winning only three of their 14 games in all competitions thus far in the 2026/27 season.
However, per Foot Mercato, Deschamps has no interest in joining Manchester United, while a report by TEAMtalk has revealed that their sources have “played down” links between the Premier League club and the French tactician while reiterating that he is not keen on moving to Old Trafford due to “the current situation at the club”.
Didier Deschamps has been one of the most accomplished managers of his generation, having overseen a golden period of French football. While Les Bleus won only two trophies, lifting the World Cup in the 2018 edition was the zenith of his career, with the 58-year-old also guiding the team to the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League title.
France also finished runners-up in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while his career at the club level has yielded eight trophies, including the Ligue 1 title, having managed AS Monaco, Juventus, and Marseille. However, the Frenchman has been a free agent since calling time on his stint with the national side after the 2026 World Cup.
Manchester United’s interest in Didier Deschamps is understandable. The Red Devils are eager to find a solution to their long-standing managerial problems, with Michael Carrick also struggling to guide the team to a stable footing. The Red Devils are level on points with 18th-placed Crystal Palace after winning only one Premier League game thus far.
While the come-from-behind 3-2 win over AS Roma provided some respite to Carrick, he is walking the tightrope until the international break. Several candidates have thus emerged on Manchester United’s wishlist, with Deschamps also a viable target due to his pragmatic outlook, which can rebuild the team from the ground up.
However, with Deschamps not interested in joining Manchester United, they must look elsewhere for an alternative. Recent reports have suggested that Christopher Vivell is pushing to bring Julian Nagelsmann to Old Trafford, while other updates have claimed that Eddie Howe and Unai Emery are also on their wishlist.
