According to a report by Sky Sports, Kalvin Phillips is on the verge of joining Sheffield United on loan on transfer deadline day. Manchester City are open to his departure, and the EFL Championship outfit are within touching distance of striking a deal for the former Leeds United star.
After coming up the ranks at the Yorkshire-based outfit and making a name for himself while playing for them, he ended up joining Manchester City in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth £42 million. Unfortunately, the move to City has not gone according to plan.
The 30-year-old has failed to establish himself in their first team, and he has spent a significant amount of time out on loan. After a spell at Ipswich Town last season, he ended up staying at Manchester City this time around. But since he is not an important part of Pep Guardiola’s plans, the English international has only had seven minutes of first-team action.
Despite being registered in the Premier League squad, the Englishman has not made a single league appearance. Kalvin Phillips is frustrated by the lack of minutes, and he is pushing for an exit. Even City are willing to sanction his departure. While they would love a permanent transfer, they are aware that his massive wages complicate matters.
As a result, a loan move looks more likely with the Manchester-based giants paying a part of his salary for the move to go through. Sheffield United have emerged as a potential destination for the youngster. Chris Wilder is pushing hard to bring him to Bramall Lane and help last year’s Championship play-off finalists climb the table from their current bottom-half position.
The English second-tier outfit are in talks with Manchester City regarding a sensational loan move. While there is a lot of competition for his signature, Sheffield have made significant progress in their pursuit of the English midfielder. Kalvin Phillips is keen on joining them, as a move back to Yorkshire could help rejuvenate his career.
His desire to join them certainly gives them a massive advantage over other top clubs. Sheffield should soon wrap this deal up. While City do manage to get him off their books, they will continue to pay the bulk of Phillips’ salary, which certainly doesn’t help.
