Manchester United remain in search of their next permanent manager. While Michael Carrick has done wonders for them since taking charge as the caretaker, the Red Devils continue to look at potential options who could take over on a permanent basis ahead of next season.
Oliver Glasner is one of the names on their wishlist. He remains in contention for the job, but according to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, his chances have taken a hit because of his recent frustrations and outbursts at Selhurst Park.
Glasner has done wonders for the Eagles since taking charge at the start of 2024. He has led them to the FA Cup and the Community Shield, but all the good work seems to have been undone in the ongoing campaign. The 51-year-old hasn’t been pleased with the fact that the majority of his star players have been sold without bringing in proper replacements.
With the team struggling to get the desired results, the departure of Marc Guehi mid-season didn’t go down well with the Palace boss, and he has openly expressed himself. While he has already confirmed his departure at the end of the season, his behaviour and the manner in which he has conducted himself during press conferences haven’t helped his cause of landing a bigger job in the Premier League.
Glasner has been widely linked with the Manchester United job, but O’Rourke believes he is no longer the front-runner because of how he has conducted himself at Palace in recent months.
He said: “Yeah, I think it definitely raises a few red flags, his recent behaviour. I don’t think you’d be able to get away with that at Man United.
“As a Manchester United manager, you have to put up with all types of adversity, so much scrutiny and pressure on the position.
“I don’t think anybody higher up at Old Trafford would appreciate some of the things that Oliver Glasner has done at Palace recently.
“He is a frustrated figure at the minute, with the way things have worked out at Crystal Palace, having to sell their best players in the last two windows.
“I think he was always an outsider anyway for the Man United job.
“Glasner, we know, has done a really good job at Palace, but I don’t think he was ever a front runner for this Manchester United role.”
Glasner has done a great job at Palace, and he could be a great option for Manchester United. But since he hasn’t coped well with the frustration, he doesn’t seem to be an ideal candidate to take over at Old Trafford.
O’Roruke believes the 51-year-old was always an outside for the role, and his chances have been hampered because of how things have panned out at Selhurst Park in the ongoing campaign. He is no longer a leading candidate for the United job, which still remains up for grabs despite Carrick’s exceptional start after taking charge mid-season.
