Arne Slot had an exceptional first season at Liverpool as he guided them to the league title. However, the Dutch manager hasn’t been able to back it up this time around, despite having spent a fortune to reinforce his squad last summer.
As a result, he has been under pressure to save his job for some time now. Of late, former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has been linked with the Liverpool job. While his time in Spain didn’t go according to plan, he had an exceptional track record in Germany. According to a report from TEAMtalk, these links between Alonso and Liverpool are bothering Slot.
The Dutch manager took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2024 and delivered the Premier League title in his first season in charge. On the back of those performances, the board backed him with some serious money during the summer.
Following multiple record-breaking signings, the Reds were expected to challenge for all major titles. However, as things stand, there are high chances of them going trophyless. While Slot’s contract runs until the summer of 2027, his future is no longer certain with the club winning just 24 out of 44 games this term (14 defeats).
Reports from Spain suggest Xabi Alonso already has a three-year deal in place with the Reds to take over from him. Liverpool sources have denied those claims, insisting they do not have any agreement with their former midfielder and haven’t held talks with him.
However, what they cannot deny is that Slot’s job is not safe, and his position will be reviewed after the end of the season. Slot is growing increasingly frustrated, and there is genuine concern behind the scenes that he might not be able to re-establish them as title contenders.
A lot of that pressure comes from the fact that they spent around £440 million last summer. While they haven’t held talks with Alonso, they do admire the Spanish midfielder. The former Real Madrid manager wants to manage in England, and he would love to be in charge of his former club. With him available following his departure from Madrid, the pressure is certainly on Slot.
