Valentin Barco set to join Chelsea this summer

Premier League giants Chelsea are reportedly set to sign 21-year-old Argentine international Valentin Barco from Ligue 1 club RC Strasbourg in the summer transfer window.

According to an update by Argentine journalist Augusto Cesar, RC Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The latest report has brought good news for Chelsea, as they are on the cusp of bringing the South American midfielder back to the Premier League after striking an agreement for a summer deal. While Bayern Munich also wanted to sign Barco from Strasbourg, the Premier League giants have accelerated the move and wrapped up the negotiations.

How has Valentin Barco fared in Ligue 1?

Valentin Barco has landed on his feet since joining RC Strasbourg from Brighton & Hove Albion. A native of 25 de Mayo, the youngster spent his formative years in Argentina and graduated from the youth division at Boca Juniors. However, the 21-year-old had to bide his time before establishing a stable foothold at the Ligue 1 club, initially on loan before sealing a permanent deal last summer.

Barco has been excellent in the 2025/26 season, scoring two goals and providing nine assists in 37 outings thus far. Meanwhile, the youngster’s exploits have earned him his international bow while stimulating the interest of several high-profile clubs, including Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

A man in demand

Valentin Barco has been on Chelsea’s wishlist for a long time. The continued interest has been understandable, as the Blues have been scouring the market for a versatile midfielder for several months. While Liam Rosenior has a stacked midfield unit, Enzo Fernandez’s long-term future is uncertain after his recent comments, which have invited disciplinary action. So, Barco has been a viable target for Chelsea.

As for Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga champions are keen on signing a midfielder this summer, as Leon Goretzka will depart from the Allianz Arena as a free agent. Additionally, Joshua Kimmich is on the wrong side of 30. So, the defensively-adept and creatively-proficient Barco is an appealing option for Bayern Munich.

However, the Bavarian giants have lost the battle for the 21-year-old Argentine midfielder’s signature, as he is on the cusp of joining Chelsea. With the West London club moving quickly to wrap up an agreement, they can focus on other deals, as the summer will be a busy period due to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
