Newcastle United table bid to sign William Gomes

Newcastle United have stepped up their pursuit of FC Porto attacking sensation William Gomes, as they have tabled an offer.

William Gomes is no longer just another name on Newcastle United’s wishlist. The Magpies have concrete interest in the young winger and have already started making moves to bring him to Tyneside. According to Bruno Andrade via SportsCenter Brasil, the Magpies have submitted an offer to sign the Sao Paulo graduate.

While FC Porto secured his services for a bargain fee of around €9 million at the start of 2025, his value has skyrocketed. The Portuguese club’s internal valuation is understood to be between €50 million and €70 million, while his release clause is set at €80 million.

The 20-year-old has not had any difficulty in adjusting to life in Portugal. He has quickly established himself as a key figure in the team. Not only is the youngster great in 1v1 situations, but Gomes also has the knack for making a difference in the final third. He has 13 goals and two assists in just over 1,800 minutes of first-team action in his 40 appearances this term.

The South American winger’s performances in the Portuguese club top flight and the Europa League have not gone unnoticed. Eduardo Burgos recently confirmed that a host of top clubs are after the 20-year-old, especially from the Premier League and Spain.

According to Burgos, FC Porto want at least €50 million for the youngster, and that everything will be decided after the World Cup. He also highlighted the fact that Newcastle have intensified their efforts to sign the youngster. The Magpies have had him on the radar from his Sao Paulo days.

Newcastle United table offer to sign Gomes

The Tyneside club’s scouts were present in the stands to watch FC Porto take on Nottingham Forest in the UEFA Europa League last week. While they had eyes on a number of targets, Gomes was certainly the biggest attraction of the night.

The 20-year-old has everything to succeed at the highest level, and with Eddie Howe’s team seeking more depth and quality in the final third, they are ready to go all-out for the player. Andrade’s report suggests the Magpies intensified their efforts and that they have submitted an offer for the Brazilian youth international.

While the finances have not been disclosed, it suggests that Newcastle United are looking to get ahead of the competition. Porto will certainly make a significant profit from his potential sale, but it will also benefit Sao Paulo, which still hold 20% of the Brazilian winger’s rights.

Gomes might not be ready to start games for Newcastle United, but he can certainly compete with Anthony Elanga for a place in the XI and could support the former Nottingham Forest star. While the offer does put them ahead of the rest, there is still a lot of work to be done.
