Nottingham Forest executive George Syrianos has rejected an approach from Marseille to become the club’s new sporting director, according to a report from Foot Mercato.
The 36-year-old Greco-German has built a strong reputation in recent years through his work at Forest, helping oversee the club’s promotion to the Premier League and return to European football this season. Syrianos is known for his modern data-driven approach and was was viewed internally as an attractive profile by OM.
Foot Mercato report that several meetings took place between the two parties before Syrianos ultimately decided against joining Marseille. Concerns over the lack of clarity surrounding the club’s financial situation and uncertainty regarding his future responsibilities reportedly contributed to his decision.
Marseille are continuing their search ahead of a major summer restructuring. Medhi Benatia is expected to leave his current role at the end of the season following the recent arrival of new president Stéphane Richard.
