FC Metz have been officially relegated to Ligue 2 with two Ligue 1 games to spare. Les Grenats have lost their 22nd league game this season on Saturday against AS Monaco. The hosts took the lead courtesy of Jessy Deminguet, but Sébastien Pocognoli’s Monégasques turned the game on its head with Folarin Balogun restoring parity and Ansu Fati delivering the fatal blow in injury-time.
FC Metz’s relegation has been a long time coming. Les Grenats have spent the majority of the campaign rooted at the bottom of the standings. The last of their three Ligue 1 wins this season dates back to November.
With a meagre 16 points’ tally with two games to spare – against Lorient and at Nice – Metz can no longer catch up with 16th-placed Auxerre and their 25 points. Metz are relegated to Ligue 2 for the 12th time in their history. No club went down as many times as them.
As for Monaco, they’re up to sixth and above Marseille, who have been inflicted a shock 3-0 loss by Nantes.
