RC Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser (21) is set for inclusion in France’s World Cup squad, as per a report from Onze Mondial.
There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding Didier Deschamps’ pick for third-choice goalkeeper for this summer’s World Cup, set to be held in North America. Lucas Chevalier had looked nailed on for the role, however, his fall from grace at Paris Saint-Germain and demotion to No.2, behind Matvey Safonov, could now cost him his place, Onze Mondial understands.
Mike Maignan will be the No.1 pick, ahead of Stade Rennais’ Brice Samba. Risser looks set to be third-choice, despite the Lens goalkeeper going into this summer’s tournament uncapped at international level.
There had been rumours of Hugo Lloris coming out of international retirement in order to take a place in France’s squad, whilst Como’s Jean Butez has also been cited as a potential solution. However, it is Risser, recently named in the UNFP’s Ligue 1 Team of the Season, who looks likely to board the plane to North America. Deschamps announces his 26-man squad tonight (Thursday).
