At least 40 people have drowned in France since 18th June, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced. It comes amid an historic heatwave in the country.
Kenzo Kies, formerly of AS Saint-Étienne and under contract at Ligue 2 side EA Guingamp at the time of his death, has passed away after drowning in the Rhone River on Monday. He was pulled out of the water and was in a state of brain death until passing away on Wednesday. The news was confirmed by Guingamp, with his former club, Saint-Étienne, also expressing their condolences.
Kies played for Olympique Lyonnais at youth level before going to AS Saint-Priest. He was at ASSE between 2018 and 2025. He joined Guingamp last summer. He did not make a first-team appearance, instead featuring for the club’s reserve side.
On Monday, he was swimming with three friends, who were saved by the emergency services. They were swimming in a dangerous area in which another man died back in 2025.
