Tjaronn Chery has confirmed, via NEC Nijmegen, that he will not be coming out of international retirement for Suriname. The former QPR and Antwerp man did come out of international retirement to try and help Suriname make the 2026 World Cup. Once the nation missed out, Chery returned to international retirement. The sides new head coach, Henk Fraser, approached the former QPR fan favourite, but he stated that he will remain retired from the national team.
The 38-year-old Chery has spent the last two seasons with NEC Nijmegen. Previously, he has played for the likes of FC Twente, Cambuur, FC Emmen, ADO Den Haag and FC Groningen. In the summer of 2015 he left Dutch football to join QPR. Chery spent two seasons in London with QPR, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists over the course of 60 odd games. In 2017 he left for spells in China, Türkiye and Israel.
In 2023 he joined Nijmegen on a return to the Dutch top flight midway through the 2023/2024 season. Over the course of one season he played 18 games for the side, scoring six goals and providing four assists. He then moved south of the border to Belgium for a strong season with Antwerp, scoring 18 goals and providing seven assists in 45 games. Since returning to NEC, Chery has played 48 games, with 13 goals and nine assists.
