Poor Excelsior were absolutely humiliated on Sunday afternoon by FC Twente. The away side ran riot as they recorded a 9-0 win and set a number of Eredivisie records, both as a club and league wide, in the process. Wout Weghorst helped himself to four goals as Excelsior’s strong start to the season became a distant memory. For Twente, this result puts them firmly in a title race with PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord, with just two pints between them in fourth and Feyenoord in first.
Unsurprisingly, the victory for Twente was their biggest league win, while at the same time it was the largest defeat Excelsior have suffered in the league. While Weghorst made headlines with his four goals, winger Sondre Ørjasæter also set a record for the most assists in a single game this century, with five in just 49 minutes. For Weghorst, this haul now moves him onto 11 goals in 18 games since joining Twente from Ajax in the summer. For Ørjasæter, this now gives him 11 assists in just 17 games this season. The Norwegian winger joined the club in 2025 from Sarpsbourg and last season managed five goals and eight assists in 34 games. Its safe to say he is well on his way to exceeding those numbers this season.
Excelsior will try to move on quickly when they face Go Ahead Eagles next weekend. For Twente, they go into their Europa Conference League clash at home to Pafos full of confidence.
