La Liga giants Barcelona have on Thursday locked a member of the club’s defensive ranks down for the long-term. This comes amid confirmation that Xavi Espart has put pen to paper on a new contract.
Youngster Espart is for his part fresh off what has been nothing short of a brilliant opening to the new campaign. Switched from his usual berth on the right to the left, the Spaniard has responded with a string of standout performances.
Across five league starts to date, Espart has notched a goal and two assists, enough to establish himself ahead of both João Cancelo and Alejandro Balde in boss Hansi Flick’s left-back pecking order.
Still just 19 years of age, the Spanish youth international is therefore now considered a long-term piece of the defensive puzzle at the Spotify Camp Nou.
And as alluded to above, this week, Espart’s growing prominence has been aptly recognised by those in a position of power in Catalunya’s capital.
As per a statement across Barcelona’s official social media platforms, the young defender has signed a new contract, through the summer of 2030:
The future is his, and it's blaugrana.
