According to TEAMtalk, Wrexham are targeting a host of academy-level signings in the summer to strengthen the ranks behind the first-team setup. Of the players they are keen on, Newcastle United’s 17-year-old wonderkid Matheos Ferreira is one of them, with the Welsh side expected to approach for the teenager.
Wrexham are making headlines in the EFL Championship, as they are one of the favourites to clinch a play-off spot at the end of the season. Should they make it there and to the Premier League by winning the play-off final, it would be a fourth straight promotion earned by the Welsh side, backed by ambitious owners and a structure that is helping them rise above the rest.
The Welsh side are also mindful of bridging the gap with other rivals when it comes to improving their academy ranks as well as transfer activity. The Championship flyers are making some moves to strengthen their academy ranks and have a few players from Premier League clubs shortlisted as potential targets.
Among those is Matheos Ferreira, the 17-year-old wonderkid from Newcastle United, with the winger impressing in displays with the youth sides. The Magpies may have offered him a professional contract when he turned 17 back in August of last year, meaning Wrexham may have to pay significantly for the player yet to make a first-team appearance.
A significant sale means Newcastle United make a pure profit on their homegrown star, while Wrexham get an up-and-coming talent that they can develop in their own way. It remains to be seen whether the Welsh side makes their move for the teenager, which may still materialise irrespective of their promotion chances.
On the one hand, they are eager to develop the club in the background in the right way, while they might also be making plans to make some eye-catching signings if they do make it to the Premier League. There are links with Fulham winger Harry Wilson, while other top-flight level players are also linked.
Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson is also a target as he winds down his deal at Merseyside, and there might be other players with the right mix of experience and ability to unlock Wrexham’s potential. However, these arrivals or targets are only on the cards if they secure four promotions in a row, culminating in a return to the Premier League.
