Eliezer Mayenda (21) has completed a move to Stade Rennais from Sunderland. The Spain youth international has joined in a deal worth €20m, without bonuses.
Mayenda joined Sunderland three years ago. He made 72 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring 12 goals in that time. Last season, following the club’s promotion back to the Premier League, the Spaniard struggled for game time. He netted two goals in 24 appearances in all competitions.
Having come through the ranks at FC Sochaux, Mayenda now returns to France and has signed a five-year deal at Rennes, who will compete in the UEFA Europa League next season. He is their fourth signing of the summer transfer window after Adrien Thomasson, Goncalo Oliveira, and Issa Soumaré.
At Roazhon Park, Mayenda will have to work hard to break into the team. He will compete for a place with Esteban Lepaul, who finished last season as the top-scorer in Ligue 1.
