Manchester United hope to sign Morten Hjulmand for £50 million

Manchester United will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old Danish international Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP in a deal worth £50 million next year.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Morten Hjulmand is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are eager to bolster their first-team squad by signing a world-class holding midfielder in the winter transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Sporting CP skipper has emerged as a target.

The Dane has a release clause of £70 million in his contract with Sporting CP. However, Manchester United will hope to land Hjulmand at a discounted rate, and they are optimistic about securing his services in a deal worth around £50 million.

Morten Hjulmand and his fruitful Sporting CP spell so far

Morten Hjulmand has established himself as one of the world’s best defensive midfielders since joining Sporting CP from US Lecce in August 2023. The 26-year-old hit the ground running at the Portuguese club, with Ruben Amorim taking a liking to his consistent and top-class performances in the middle of the park. The Manchester United manager also installed him as the club captain.

The Danish international has made over 100 appearances thus far for Sporting CP while chipping in with eight goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Hjulmand’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several European bigwigs. Manchester United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the winter transfer window.

Amorim reunion on the horizon?

Manchester United wanted to sign Morten Hjulmand in the summer transfer window, but the deal failed to materialise. The continued interest makes sense, as Casemiro faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford; he is also approaching the twilight of his storied career. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte has struggled to make his mark since joining Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain last year.

Several candidates, including Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, have thus emerged on Manchester United’s radar, with Hjulmand also a viable target. However, a valuation gap poses the highest risk to a deal, as the 26-year-old Dane’s contract has a release clause worth £70 million. However, the Premier League giants hope to secure his services for around £50 million.

However, while Ruben Amorim is pushing to reunite with Hjulmand in the winter transfer window, convincing Sporting CP to sell the player for a discounted price of around £50 million will be a tall order. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Danish international.
