Samu Aghehowa’s sensational performances at FC Porto have not gone unnoticed. Multiple top clubs are keeping tabs on his progress and would love to sign the Spanish international.
According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Newcastle United and Tottenham are keen on securing his signature, but they have suffered a blow as the former Atletico Madrid sensation is unlikely to move in the upcoming transfer window. The Spaniard is happy at the Portuguese club, and he is expected to stick around until after the World Cup.
Aghehowa had an impressive loan spell at Deportivo Alaves, and on the back of it, Porto secured his services in the summer of 2024 from Atletico Madrid. The 21-year-old striker has only gone from strength to strength since making the switch to the Portuguese top flight.
So far, the young striker has been involved in 57 matches, and he has contributed towards 40 goals (36 goals, 4 assists). He has started the 2025/26 campaign in fine fashion with nine goals and an assist in his 12 outings.
The Olympic gold medalist’s stellar progress and his consistent performances in the final third have put him on the radar of multiple top clubs. Tottenham are one of the clubs that have been keeping tabs on the former Atletico Madrid prospect.
Thomas Frank is desperately looking for more quality in attack, as Dominic Solanke has struggled to stay fit. They believe Samu Aghehowa could help cover for the English international and eventually become one of their mainstays.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United have also entered the race for his signature. The Tyneside club ended up signing Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade in the summer to cope with Alexander Isak’s departure. While Woltermade has been on fire since joining them, Wissa is yet to make an appearance because of injury troubles.
With the former Brentford striker out injured, reports suggest Eddie Howe is now interested in bringing Samu to St. James’ Park. They could end up making a move for him in January. While he is protected by a massive £87 million release clause, the Tynside club will be hoping to strike a deal well below that figure.
However, Pete O’Rourke feels a move in the winter window is very unlikely. FC Porto won’t want to lose out on one of their best players mid-season, and Samu Aghehowa also seems quite content at the Portuguese club.
The transfer expert said, “Porto are going good in the Portuguese league right now. They’ll be very reluctant to sell Aghehowa and I’m sure the player himself is happy with life at Porto right now.
“He’ll be focusing on doing his best for him and winning his place in the Spain squad for the World Cup. So I don’t see any move happening in January. Look, there’s a lot of interest in like Aghehowa, a top young player, still only 21, six-foot-four. He looks like he’s built for the Premier League. He’s got good pace, he’s a good finisher.”
FC Porto are in contention for the league title, and they will be reluctant to let go of their star forward. The player is also happy at the club, and with the World Cup coming up, he might not want to risk a move six months prior to the global event. Samu Aghehowa will be focused on doing his best for Porto and securing a place in the Spain squad for next summer’s main event.
