Chelsea, Tottenham front-runners to sign Samu Aghehowa

Chelsea and Tottenham are the front-runners for the signature of Samu Aghehowa, who could be made available in January at a discounted price.

According to Correio da Manha via Sport Witness, Chelsea and Tottenham are viewed as front-runners in the hunt for Samu Aghehowa. The Spanish striker could be made available ahead of the January window at a discounted price as FC Porto might sell due to financial pressure.

Samu Aghehowa was widely expected to make a switch to one of the bigger sides last summer, but ended up staying at Porto. There is no clarity whether some of the teams did attempt to sign him, but it appears the Portuguese giants negotiated with Atletico Madrid to acquire 100% of his rights.

Since then, Porto have included a €100 million release clause in his contract that lasts until 2029, which would not put the Portuguese side under immediate pressure to sell him. However, there are financial aspects at the club that could force a sale, with Porto already considering their options ahead of January.

As per the report, club president Andre Villas Boas is ready to sanction Samu Aghehowa’s sale for a discounted price in January if suitors can come up with offers of €80 million. The price point is €20 million less than his €100 million release clause, with the 21-year-old Olympic gold medalist already attracting the interest of Tottenham and Chelsea.

Chelsea had been thinking about a big-money bid for Aghehowa, having failed to sign him back in the summer of 2024 from Atletico Madrid. They are still experimenting with the centre-forward position, and if Liam Delap does not work, the Blues could potentially dip into the January market for someone like the 21-year-old striker.

Tottenham are looking at Samu Aghehowa

Tottenham have Aghehowa on their list as part of future attacking signings, and currently, they have plenty of funds to make a deal happen. The €80 million price point was mentioned in another report, and Spurs would have no qualms in paying that sort of money for an exceptional talent like the 21-year-old.

The issue for Tottenham ahead of the winter transfer window is to create space in the squad for another striker, given they currently have three senior forwards. Richarlison has been linked with a move away, and should the Brazilian consider his future in North London, a potential outlay on Aghehowa could become a possibility.
