According to The Sun, George Abbott is all set for a return to League One football as Mansfield Town are closing in on a loan move for the 20-year-old Tottenham midfield prospect. There might not be a buy option at the end of the deal, with Spurs keen to explore his future further once he returns in the summer.
The lower league is often a solution for some of the top Premier League clubs to aid player development. It is not the ideal choice for those teams, but should interest from fellow league sides or in the Championship evaporates, going further lower is what seems viable for most players.
That is the case for George Abbott, who has so far failed to make an impact good enough for him to be considered for the first team. The youngster has played for the senior side just once, when he came on as a late substitute on the final day of the 2022/23 season, playing a minute against Leeds United.
The Englishman has since had a successful loan spell at Notts County, but the club felt another temporary spell would be a good way to further gauge his talents. However, since moving to Wycombe Wanderers in the summer, and having established himself as a key part early on, he has only featured once off the bench since early October.
Spurs felt he could not continue with his spell at Wycombe and decided to recall him from his loan. However, they are now eager to send Abbott back to League One, where Mansfield Town are closing in on a loan move for the 20-year-old Tottenham midfield prospect.
George Abbott is yet to get the taste of higher-level football consistently, but from the club’s perspective, they might have preferred to send him back to League One for continuity purposes. He did have a good opening spell with Wycombe this season, and once he makes the move to Mansfield Town, the 20-year-old Tottenham prodigy could continue what he started earlier in the season.
This second League One loan spell in this part of the season would help Spurs gauge his talents better moving forward. They will certainly hope Abbott performs well and makes himself a steady player good enough to at least play in the EFL Championship, which may seem like a viable destination for him in the future, as he may not get another shot at Tottenham’s first-team squad.
