Tottenham fail with late approach to sign Angelo Gabriel

Tottenham have reportedly failed with a late approach for Angelo Gabriel as Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr are not interested in a winter departure.

According to Eduardo Burgos, Tottenham may have failed with a late move for former Chelsea attacker Angelo Gabriel. Spurs were showing late interest in the Brazilian in a bid to shore up their attacking options following Mohammed Kudus’s injury, but current side Al-Nassr are uninterested in letting the 21-year-old South American leave in January.

Tottneham had been keeping a close eye on he market as they may have pondered late on bringing in a few attackers. Thomas Frank’s side have many injuries to deal with in every department of the squad, with the attacking areas a particular source of concern for the Danish tactician.

The big injury to Mohammed Kudus and the sale of Brennan Johnson right before that have left Frank short on numbers in the wide areas. With the winter transfer window about to end, there have been reports linking Spurs to Jhon Duran and Moussa Diaby, as a striker might have also popped up on their shortlist.

However, they may have other targets in mind, as it appears Tottenham may have failed with a late move for Al-Nassr winger Angelo Gabriel. Some might remember the 21-year-old South American as one of the early Chelsea signings from Brazil, although he never played a senior game for the Blues, and instead spent a season on loan at RC Strasbourg before his switch to the Saudi Pro League.

He has been a modest performer for Al-Nassr during his 18 months there, as his numbers have not shown any productive signs yet. Nevertheless, Spurs might have made a late bid to test the Saudi Pro League side, who are not keen on a sale in the winter window, although they might have hinted at being open ahead of the summer window.

What are Tottenham’s deadline day plans?

As things stand, things are quiet over at the North London side, with activity only around a potential move for James Wilson from Hearts on loan. The young striker is expected to join after Spurs reportedly beat Arsenal for the teenager’s signature.

Beyond that, it is difficult to see Spurs recruiting for the first team in the final hours of the window, although a late twist is always possible. For now, they may not end up bringing in that winger that they so desperately need and instead will focus on using their existing options. As for Angelo, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham revisit their interest in the 21-year-old South American when the summer window opens.
