Newcastle United keen on Odilon Kossounou

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are keen on acquiring the services of Atalanta defensive sensation Odilon Kossounou.

Odilon Kossounou has had quite an impressive rise in recent years, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Ivorian international is attracting a lot of interest from England in particular, and according to a report from Africafoot, Newcastle United are one of the clubs that are interested in acquiring his services.

Kossounou made a name for himself while playing for Bayer Leverkusen before joining Atalanta in the summer of 2024. He initially joined the Italian club on a season-long loan. However, the move was made permanent during the last summer window.

So far, the Ivorian defender has been involved in 47 matches for the Italian outfit and has even contributed towards three goals. 23 of those appearances have come in the ongoing campaign. While he has had some injury troubles, when fit, the 25-year-old is right up there with the best defenders in the Serie A.

Newcastle want to sign Kossounou this summer

Thanks to his impressive performances, clubs in the Premier League are after his signature. Newcastle are keen on adding him to their squad, as they look to bolster their backline. With Fabian Schar and Dan Burn in the final phase of their career, Howe certainly needs to freshen things up at the back.

At 25, they see Kossounou as a strategic option to reinforce their defence. He has enough experience at the highest level, and Newcastle are confident about him having an immediate impact at their club.

While he is currently valued at around €25 million, a potential transfer will certainly require a much higher investment given his age and the fact that he still has over three years left on his deal.

The Magpies have been keeping tabs on him for a while and could soon step up their interest to bring him to Tyneside. Interest from the English top flight will certainly tempt Kossounou, who has shown a lot of promise while playing in the Bundesliga and now the Serie A.

Eddie Howe‘s team are not the only club that are interested in his services; as a result, it will be interesting to see if they do manage to secure his services ahead of next season.
