Celtic eyeing Alfie Devine move, Martin O’Neill monitors player

Celtic are keen to explore a move for Alfie Devine after interim boss Martin O’Neill was in attendance to watch the midfielder in action for Preston North End.

Alfie Devine could be handed a chance to play at a higher level than his current status, as Celtic are reportedly eyeing a possible move ahead of the summer. As per Football Insider, Martin O’Neill was in attendance to watch the on-loan Tottenham midfielder in action for Preston, which has fuelled speculation about a potential move in the close season.

Alfie Devine has been a smart signing for Preston North End on loan from Tottenham, which has helped the team rise to a certain degree. Despite his eight goals and four assists in the Championship this season from 40 appearances, the 21-year-old has not managed to push the team near a playoff spot.

Celtic are seemingly looking at him closely in a bid to explore a summer move, as Martin O’Neill was in attendance to watch Devine in action for Preston against QPR. The game ended with a 1-1 scoreline, but there might be a case that the interim boss wanted to watch the player in the flesh.

Whether or not he was impressed by his game remains the question, but Celtic could be in the market for a new attacking midfielder. Tottenham are yet to decide on Alfie Devine’s future, but the fingers currently point at him not being a big part of their thinking moving forward, especially with the many links to top players in the media.

Devine has considerable first-team experience, mostly in the EFL Championship, where he is currently playing for Preston and had previously featured for Plymouth Argyle. He has also spent a season on loan in Belgium with KVC Westerloo, and a move to Celtic could be a big step up in his career. It is yet to be clear if the Scottish giants are readying an offer to test Tottenham’s resolve on the 21-year-old homegrown prospect.

What are Celtic’s summer plans?

Celtic are in the mix for an attacking midfielder, with Alfie Devine one of those on their list. Incidentally, he could be viewed as a replacement for the high-performing Benjamin Nygren, with Tottenham interested in the Swedish international, which could, in turn, allow both clubs to find common ground for the two players.

Celtic are also interested in securing players in other key positions, although they are not expected to win the race for Andrew Robertson, with Tottenham leading that particular race at the moment. There could be reinforcements in defence as well as in other areas, as the Scottish giants are expecting a busy summer ahead.
