Atletico Madrid eyeing summer move for Matthijs de Ligt

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly eyeing a summer swoop for Manchester United star Matthijs de Ligt.

Manchester United’s summer is shaping up to be one of difficult decisions as much as fresh arrivals. When a squad is in transition, not every established name is guaranteed to remain central to the long-term plan and that uncertainty often creates openings for clubs elsewhere in Europe.

That appears to be the case with Matthijs de Ligt, once regarded as one of the most complete young centre-backs in world football, the Dutch defender still carries a strong reputation across the continent. But after another season where his role has come under scrutiny, questions are now being asked about whether Old Trafford is truly the right stage for the next phase of his career.

According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are seriously considering a move for de Ligt this summer as they look to strengthen Diego Simeone’s defence with proven quality and top-level experience.

The Spanish giants are believed to be assessing central defensive options closely, and de Ligt’s name has emerged as one of the more attractive opportunities on the market. From Atletico’s point of view, the appeal is obvious as he is still only 26, has already played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs and offers the kind of leadership profile that naturally fits Simeone’s demands.

The Dutchman’s style also aligns neatly with what Atletico typically value in a centre-back, as he is aggressive in duels, physically strong, tactically intelligent and comfortable taking responsibility in high-pressure matches. Even if his stock has cooled slightly compared to his Ajax breakthrough years, there is still a lot to like about what he brings.

The bigger question is whether Manchester United would genuinely be willing to part ways with him so soon. The club only brought him in from Bayern Munich in a deal worth an initial €45 million, potentially rising to €50 million with add-ons, and would likely want to protect that investment as much as possible.

Still, much depends on how Manchester United view their defensive hierarchy going into next season. With Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and other options competing for major roles, de Ligt’s long-term place may not be as untouchable as it once looked.

Reports suggest Atletico Madrid believe a fee in the region of €35 million to €40 million could be enough to tempt negotiations, though Manchester United may well hold out for something closer to what they originally paid. If the player himself becomes open to a fresh start, that could shift the dynamic quickly.

Matthijs de Ligt to Atletico Madrid actually makes a lot of football sense. Simeone loves defenders with personality, presence and edge, and the Dutch defender still has all three. The bigger issue is whether Manchester United are ready to admit this is not working as cleanly as they hoped. If they are, Los Rojiblancos could be getting a defender with something to prove and that is usually a dangerous combination.
